The Moncade Castle in Orthez was built between the 13th and 14th century and bears witness to Gaston Fébus, Vicomte de Béarn and Comte de Foix's ambition to make Béarn a completely separate Pyrenean State. The astle is 110 metres high and dominates the town.

The Age of Knights

The moat is an exceptional example of medieval military architecture with its original geometric structure and well thought-through finish. The vertical slopes of the escarpments ensured that there were no blind spots and made the fortress impregnable.

The rampart protecting the castle's square is also equipped with an original system with triple arrow-slits. Each position sheltered three archers enabling them to follow their target in the moat.

Entering the keep

Immediately that you enter the keep by the gothic gateway you are surprised by the thickness of the walls. On the first floor in the old guards' room the history of the castle has been retold in son et lumière.

At the top there is a clear view over the town and the Pyrénées, Orthez and its roofs with Roman tiles and hidden gardens....

The keep has a number of exhibitions on offer for those not able to reach the top there is a 3D film of the visit on the first floor.
