In a village in the Béarn hills nestles Lacommande and one of the very rare "Commanderies" still in existence, the Commanderie de Lacommande. You'll love !
- the Romanesque scuptures in St Blaise Church
- the old cemetry
- trying Jurançon wines
Built in the 12th century by Gaston IV known as "le Croisé", of the Cross, this hospitalier served as a refuge for pilgrims on the Arles route to Compostella, between Lescar and Oloron. Today the church and refuge are classified as Historical Monuments.
With the original cloisters there is a green area with trees and flowers alongside the old cemetery containing an important collection of discoid gravestones dating back to the 17th century.
The 12th century church of St Blaise is a little jewel of Romanesque art. Inside, in the apse you will find finely carved capitals representing biblical and mythological scenes and those from daily life.
Just opposite is the House of Wine which is an ideal place to find quality Jurançon wines : sweet and dry wines and other local products are stocked. It's a good time to stop for a meal.
* A commanderie is where a "commander" or dignitary of some religious and/or military orders were based.
