The Chrestia House in Orthez is a fine 18th century Béarnais residence. The French poet Francis Jammes who was also a novelist, dramatist and critics lived here from 1897 to 1907.

It was in this house that he wrote:”De l’Angélus de l’aube à l’Angélus du soir”, “Clara d’Ellébeuse”,” le Deuil des primevères”, “Almaïde d’Etremont”,” le Romain du lièvre”, “Pomme d’anis”.

 

Today the Chrestia House is the headquarters for the Association Francis Jammes formed in 1982 in Orthez to make the poet's work more widely known in France and abroad.

 

Since its formation, the association has received an important gift from the Jammes’ family: manuscripts, correspondence, books, sheet music, photographs, illustrated books etc.

 

The collection has been added to by other acquisitions and gifts over the years.

 

In 2012, the Chrestia House received recognition from the Ministry of Culture and Communication as a Maison des Illustres.

Opening Hours:

From 12 January to 10 July: Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm. From 13 July to 30 October: From Tuesdays to Saturday from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm. From 2 November to 18 December: Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm.
