Lucq-de-Béarn is a typically Béarnais village with its traditional houses with its numerous decorative friezes, hipped roofs in slate or tiles.

Not far from the central square and its fountain, St Vincent church is in Romano Gothic style covering a number of centuries of history (12th to 16th century). The bell-tower entrance and its door in basket weave patterns and the doorway which dates from the 16th century invite you to enter the church.

A sarcophagus

When you push open the door there is remarkable surprise awaiting you… a fifth century sarcophagus. Sculpted entirely  from white marble it was discovered  in the 19th century under the church floor-tiles and now serves as the altar. Capitals sculpted in the 12th century stand side-by-side with altarpieces, pictures and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Son et lumière

St Vincent comes to life again in a son et lumière display reenacting its history and presenting its rich furnishings.  Nearby the vestiges and tower of the ancient abbey makes you wonder at the size of the original building.

What a wonderful discovery!
